Our schools in Bangkok and Beijing have started their new academic years.

Good news have been the announcement of the appointment of a Head Master for HIS Hong Kong and the securing of a site in Beijing where a new school will be constructed at which the whole school can come together on one campus.

Mr. Mel Mrowiec has been appointed Head Master of HIS Hong Kong.

Harrow International Management Services and Harrow School London are delighted to announce that Mr. Mel Mrowiec has accepted our invitation to become the Head Master of Harrow International School Hong Kong, which is due to open in August 2012.

Mr. Mrowiec has been the Deputy Head Master at Harrow School in London since 2004. Prior to this post, his career at Harrow has included spells as House Master of Rendalls and Head of Geography. He began teaching at King James’s School, Knaresborough and was Head of Sixth Form at West Somerset School, Minehead before moving to Harrow.

Mr. Mrowiec is a Geography graduate of Christ Church College, Oxford. He played in four Varsity matches at Wembley to win his Oxford soccer blues and also played junior county cricket at all levels for Suffolk. He is married to Vivien and they have four daughters. Vivien teaches Physical Education at Francis Holland School in London and coaches tennis at Harrow. She played senior county tennis for Middlesex and Yorkshire and still plays competitively, although both she and her husband are now keen golfers.

Mr. Mrowiec’s appointment ensures that the connections between Harrow School and Harrow International School Hong Kong will be strong and that there will be a real commitment to academic excellence, an all round education, a boarding ethos and high expectations of students and staff.

After a long search for the right land in the right location, land has been secured in Beijing for the construction of a fully integrated campus at a location between the current Anxhenzili campus (Upper School) and Grassetown Campus (Lower and Prep Schools). The design process is now under way and we hope construction will start later in the year.

Meanwhile other programmes under our Educational Services division are proceeding. The UK –based Fusion performing arts school again ran summer programmes in Bangkok and we started our first Fusion program in Beijing this summer. In October our first teacher development programme in association with Dragonfly, also from the UK, will be offered in Bangkok and Beijing.

Leadership for a better world

HIMS has been active in the New Year which suddenly is not so new!

Preparations for the school in Hong Kong are continuing on schedule. The design of the school is complete and was presented at a press conference in Hong Kong in April. Along with our special guest, Mr Barnaby Lenon, the Head of Harrow School in London, we were also pleased to meet 280 prospective parents at an evening function on the same day as the press conference. We now have over 500 registrations of interest from parents of prospective students for the school. We are now in the process of going to tender to appoint a construction company to build the school. P and T’s design is impressive and innovative while highly functional and practical.

Construction will commence later in the year. We will soon be appointing a Head Master and in February 2011 will start to appoint other senior staff with the balance of teaching staff being appointed a year later in readiness for opening in August 2012.

Other locations around the region are being actively considered as we move towards our aspiration of around 5 international schools.

We have also launched a new division, Education Services, led by former Head of Administration at HIS Bangkok, Mrs Anna Whitcraft. She is working alongside other educational providers in order to facilitate the provision of summer programmes involving specialisms in performing arts and languages and,  developing a number of CPD and training programmes.

Harrow International is expanding

Posted by mark_h | General | Posted on December 11th, 2009

Harrow International is in the process of expanding its mission in Asia. Harrow International established schools in Bangkok in 1998 and Beijing 2005 and the master plan for the next school, Harrow Hong Kong, has recently been finalised.

Harrow International School Hong Kong will open in August 2012. The priorities at present are to complete detailed drawings and fully meet government regulations so that construction can commence in the second half of 2010. The overall design of the school is an exciting combination of aesthetic attractiveness and functional efficiency, designed to fully support the broad curricular and co-curricular programmes that will be offered at the school and boarding houses, a home-away-from-home for many Secondary students.

While planning for HISHK continues on schedule, other locations deemed potentially suitable for establishing at least one more Harrow International School are being explored. In time the Harrow International will comprise a group of up to five schools which will reflect a geographical and cultural diversity in which students and teachers will experience rich opportunities for interaction and support.

Meanwhile, the existing schools continue to strengthen the quality of educational provision. The building of a specialist Sixth Form Centre is being discussed in Bangkok and finalising the location of an integrated Primary/Secondary site in Beijing is well advanced there. With low staff turnover again at both schools, ongoing consistency and quality of educational provision are assured.
