COO and Executive Head Master, Dr J. Mark Hensman
Previously, Dr Hensman was Headmaster of a traditional boys’ Secondary day and boarding school in New Zealand. During his Headship, he gained a reputation as a defender of a traditional approach to education during a period of significant reform. He was a member of the Minister of Education’s Principals’ advisory group and was Chairman of the independent Sixth Form External Examinations Board.
While a guardian of traditions and traditional values such as respect, Dr Hensman has always believed that schools as communities should be dynamic, innovative and more than anything, contribute to a students’ sense of meaning and purpose. This has led him in recent years to explore the implications of recent neurological research for enriching our understanding of learning and spirituality.
Dr Hensman comes from a family of educators with two of his brothers also headmasters, one now in Australia and the other still in New Zealand. His two sons are also teachers, one in Vancouver and the other in London.
Dr Hensman has been the Head Master of Harrow International School for seven years and since August 2009 has been responsible for establishing other Harrow international schools and managing the Harrow international group of schools.
Dr. Hensman is currently Chairman of the Federation of British International Schools of South and East Asia (FOBISSEA), a Director of the British Chamber of Commerce, Vice Chairman of the Royal Overseas League Thailand, and until recently, Secretary General of the International Schools Association of Thailand (ISAT).
